Day hop to Kirateshwar Mahadev at Legship

Legship sits on the Rangeet at the foot of the climb to Gyalshing and Pelling, about an hour up the river road from Jorethang. Its name comes from Lepcha, for a fern said to taste like chilli. The Kirateshwar Mahadev Temple stands on the riverbank close to town and is one of the holiest Shiva temples in Sikkim, with smaller shrines to Rama and Durga in the same complex. It sits in Gyalshing district, just across the line from South Sikkim.
Hindu tradition holds that after Arjuna's long penance, Shiva appeared to him at this very spot as the hunter Kirateshwar and blessed him before the Kurukshetra war. The main object of worship is a natural stone lingam. Kirati people call the place Kirateshwar Mahadev Thaan. Pilgrims believe a sincere visit fulfils wishes, especially for children, health and family harmony. The biggest gatherings come at Bala Chaturdashi in November–December and Maha Shivaratri in February–March.
Shared jeeps heading to Gyalshing and Pelling pass through Legship, or hire a local taxi from Jorethang with waiting for a half day; agree the price first and check current status before you travel. Entry is free. Remove shoes, dress modestly and follow the priests' lead. Pair the temple with a look at the Rangeet dam lake at Legship, or continue up to Pelling the same day. If you go back to Jorethang, leave Legship by early afternoon, as jeeps thin out later.
