Zero Point or Katao: what to expect

Katao is a high area reached from Lachung by a different road from Yumthang. Like Zero Point, it is snowy for much of the year, and like Zero Point, tourist access is not guaranteed. In some seasons it has been closed to tourists or allowed only with special arrangements. Operators sometimes sell it as an alternative when Zero Point is shut.
If you are offered Katao, ask three questions: is it open this week for tourists on the normal permit, what is the extra charge per vehicle, and how long is the drive each way. If the answers are vague, decline. You will not miss much if you have had a clear morning at Yumthang.
Never pay for Zero Point or Katao in advance at the time of booking. Access is decided on the day by the authorities and the weather, and refunds for closed roads are a common source of disputes. Pay on the morning, once your driver confirms the route is open.

Questions people ask
Good to know
Is Katao open for tourists
Access to Katao has varied from year to year and is controlled by the authorities. In some seasons tourists have been allowed, in others not. Ask your registered operator whether it is open on your dates and whether your permit covers it, and check current status before you travel.
Which is better, Zero Point or Katao
Both offer snow and high scenery; Zero Point is the more established add-on from Yumthang. Choose whichever is actually open on your day with a clear sky, and skip both if anyone in your car is unwell or the weather is poor. Neither should be paid for in advance.
Should I prepay Zero Point when booking my package
No. Zero Point opens and closes with snow, security and administrative decisions, and you cannot know weeks ahead. Pay on the morning, directly to the driver or operator, once the route is confirmed open. If an operator insists on prepayment, ask for a written refund promise.
