An altitude check that keeps you safe

Altitude sickness is not about fitness. Young, fit people get it, and older people sometimes do not. What matters is how fast you climb and whether you listen to early signs. Going from Lachung at about 2,700 m to Zero Point at about 4,660 m in two hours is a big jump, even though you sleep low again that night.
Before leaving Yumthang, ask everyone the same questions: any headache, nausea, dizziness, unusual tiredness? If you carry a pulse oximeter, readings in the 80s are common at this height and not alarming by themselves, but a person who looks unwell and reads much lower than the rest of the group should not go higher.
Agree in the car, before you start, that anyone can ask to turn back and nobody will argue. Danger signs such as breathlessness at rest, confusion, stumbling or a wet cough mean descend immediately and seek medical help. Never give alcohol or sleeping pills to someone who feels unwell at altitude.

Questions people ask
Good to know
Can I get altitude sickness at Zero Point
Yes. Zero Point is about 4,660 m, and people can feel unwell there even on a short visit. Common signs are headache, nausea and dizziness. Serious signs are breathlessness at rest, confusion and loss of balance. If anyone shows serious signs, descend at once and seek medical help.
Should I carry oxygen to Zero Point
Small oxygen cans sold in Gangtok can give brief relief but are not treatment; going down is. If you carry one, use it while you descend, not as a reason to stay longer. People with heart or lung conditions should talk to a doctor before going above Yumthang at all.
Do I need medicine for altitude before Zero Point
Most healthy visitors do not, because they sleep at Lachung and spend only a short time at Zero Point. Some doctors prescribe acetazolamide for people prone to altitude sickness. Take it only on medical advice, and still follow the rules: go slowly, drink water and turn back if unwell.
