Thangu as a high point for foreign visitors

Foreign travellers in mixed groups are often disappointed to learn that Gurudongmar is closed to them. It is a border rule, not an operator's choice. The Restricted Area Permit usually covers Lachen and the valley up to Thangu, and this is how we plan foreign groups' Lachen days.
Leave Lachen after breakfast rather than at 4 am. Drive up slowly with stops for the views back down the valley, spend an hour or two around Thangu and, where permitted, in the Chopta Valley, then return to Lachen for lunch. The pressure of the dawn dash is gone, and the altitude of about 3,900 m is easier to manage.
If your group includes Indian and foreign travellers, the Indians can go on to Gurudongmar while foreign members wait at Thangu, but this needs separate vehicles or careful timing. Discuss it with your operator before booking.

Questions people ask
Good to know
Can foreigners go to Thangu
Usually yes. Foreign nationals with a Restricted Area Permit, travelling in a group of at least two through an approved operator, can normally visit Lachen and continue up the valley to Thangu. Gurudongmar Lake beyond is not permitted for foreigners. Check current status before you travel.
What can foreigners do instead of Gurudongmar
Drive up to Thangu, visit the Chopta Valley where permitted, walk on the meadows and return to Lachen for lunch. Then continue to Lachung for Yumthang the next day, which foreigners can usually visit. Lachen Monastery is another good half-day.
Can a mixed group of Indians and foreigners travel together
Yes, but foreign members must stop at Thangu while Indian members go to Gurudongmar. This works with two vehicles or with the foreign members waiting at a tea house. Discuss logistics with your operator in advance and make sure everyone's permits are correct.
