Seeing Gurudongmar frozen

Gurudongmar usually begins to freeze from the edges in November and is largely frozen from late in the month until about mid-May. A frozen lake under a blue sky with snow on the peaks is a striking sight, and winter crowds are smaller. The trade-off is that snow on the plateau can close the road for days at a time.
Winter mornings at 5,430 m are brutally cold, often far below −10 °C with wind chill. Dress in proper layers, with a down jacket, windproof outer shell, insulated gloves, two pairs of thick socks and a balaclava or scarf over your face. Keep phones and camera batteries inside your jacket; cold drains them in minutes.
Do not walk on the ice, however solid it looks. The lake is sacred, the ice can be thin near inflows and help is far away. View it from the shore, keep the visit short, and accept that some winter trips will be turned back at Thangu.

Questions people ask
Good to know
When is Gurudongmar Lake frozen
Usually from about late November until mid-May, according to standard descriptions, with partial freezing in early November and thaw at the edges in late May. Exact timing varies each year. Road access in winter depends on snow on the plateau and can close for days. Check current status before you travel.
Can I walk on frozen Gurudongmar Lake
No. The lake is sacred to local Buddhists, and the ice can be weak near inflows and at the edges. There are no rescue facilities on the lake. View it from the shore and keep your visit to 20–30 minutes because of the altitude and the cold.
Is Gurudongmar open in January
Sometimes, but often not. In January snow on the road between Thangu and the lake frequently stops vehicles, and the army or administration may close the route. Lachen itself has had long closures since 2023. If Gurudongmar matters to you, plan for April–May or October–November instead.
