A winter night in Lava

Lava's height of about 2,200 m makes it colder than almost anywhere else most Bengal travellers can reach in a day. From late December to February, nights drop below freezing, frost whitens the forest lodge lawns, and in some years snow falls, usually lightly and for a day or two. When it does, families from Siliguri and Kolkata drive up to see it, and the bazaar fills for a weekend.
Snow is never guaranteed and can come and go in a day. What you can count on in winter is clear air: views across to the Sikkim hills are sharp, stars are bright, and the forest is quiet. Days are often sunny and pleasant for walking, around 8–12 °C, while evenings call for every layer you own.
Pack thermals, a down jacket, gloves, a warm hat and woollen socks. Rooms in the forest lodge and small hotels are not centrally heated, though some offer heaters for a charge. Roads can ice over at dawn after snowfall, so drive only once the sun is up, and keep a spare day if you are catching a flight.

Questions people ask
Good to know
Does it snow in Lava
Sometimes. Lava is one of the few places in West Bengal that can receive snow, usually in January or February, but it does not happen every year and rarely lasts long. Do not book a trip only for snow. Winter visits are still worth it for clear skies, frosty mornings and quiet forest walks.
How cold is Lava in January
Very cold for this part of India. Nights in January are usually around or below 0 °C, and days are about 8–12 °C when sunny, colder when misty. Rooms are rarely heated. Bring thermals, a down or heavy woollen jacket, a hat, gloves and warm socks, and ask your lodge for extra blankets.
Are roads to Lava open in winter
Generally yes. The Kalimpong–Algarah–Lava road stays open in winter, though it can be icy at dawn after frost or snow. Drivers usually wait until mid-morning on such days. Heavy snow is rare but can close the road briefly. Check current status before you travel and keep a spare half-day.
