Sit in on morning prayers at Kagyu Thekchen Ling, the monastery founded in 1990 by the third Jamgon Kongtrul Rinpoche beside Lava's reservoir, where more than a hundred monks study. Quiet, free and the best start to a day in Lava.

Kagyu Thekchen Ling stands at the edge of Lava bazaar beside the Neora reservoir. It belongs to the Kagyu school, one of the four main schools of Tibetan Buddhism, and was founded on 6 June 1990 by Karma Lodro Chokyi Senge, the third Jamgon Kongtrul Rinpoche. The land, about four acres, was offered by the local Buddhist community in the 1980s. More than a hundred monks now live and study here.

Morning prayers usually start early, with long horns, drums and cymbals, and visitors may sit quietly at the back of the hall. Afterwards walk around the complex clockwise past the prayer wheels and visit the Mane Lhakhang, a community temple opened by the Dalai Lama in 2001. On clear mornings the courtyard looks across to the forested ridges of Neora Valley.

Dress modestly, remove shoes where asked, and do not walk in front of monks during prayers. Ask before taking photographs, especially inside. A small donation in the box is appreciated but never demanded. The monastery is a five-minute walk from most hotels and from the forest lodge, so it fits easily before breakfast.

Questions people ask

Good to know

What time are prayers at Lava monastery

Morning prayers usually begin early, around 6 to 7 am, and can last an hour or more, with shorter sessions later in the day. Timings change with festivals, retreats and the monastic calendar, so ask at your hotel or at the monastery gate the evening before. Visitors are welcome to sit quietly at the back.

Is there an entry fee at Lava monastery

No. Entry is free, and visitors are welcome during the day as long as they behave respectfully. There is a donation box, and a small offering is appreciated. Photography rules vary; usually photos are fine outside but not always inside the prayer hall, so ask a monk first.

How far is Lava monastery from the bus stand

It is a short walk, about five minutes, from the Lava bazaar and the shared-jeep stand, beside the Neora reservoir. The forest lodge and most hotels are within ten minutes on foot. The path is slightly uphill in places, so seniors may prefer a short taxi ride.
