Dawn birding walk on the Lava forest roads

Lava sits at the junction of subtropical and temperate forest, which makes it one of the easiest places in the district for mountain birds. The best birding is on foot along the roads toward Kolakham and Rishyap and around the forest lodge, starting at first light before jeep traffic. Mixed flocks move through the canopy, and patience pays more than covering ground.
Common sightings include laughingthrushes, rufous sibias, whiskered and stripe-throated yuhinas, minivets, nuthatches, woodpeckers and several warblers. From November to March, birds that breed higher come down, and the satyr tragopan, a shy crimson pheasant, is occasionally seen on quiet forest edges. Sightings of rarer species are never guaranteed and depend on weather and luck.
A local birding guide improves the odds a lot, because they know calls and the spots birds use. Bring binoculars, wear muted colours and keep talking low. For serious birding, combine this walk with a day inside Neora Valley National Park from Zero Point, which needs a separate permit from the forest office in Lava.

Questions people ask
Good to know
What birds can I see around Lava
Around Lava expect laughingthrushes, rufous sibias, yuhinas, minivets, nuthatches, tits, woodpeckers and warblers, plus raptors over the valleys. In winter, altitudinal migrants such as some thrushes and finches come down. The satyr tragopan and other pheasants are present but shy and rarely seen. Sightings vary with season and weather.
Do I need a permit for birding around Lava
No permit is needed for birding on public roads and village paths around Lava. Entering Neora Valley National Park, including Zero Point and the forest trails beyond, requires a day permit from the forest range office in Lava, plus vehicle and guide fees. The park is closed from mid-June to mid-September; check current status before you travel.
When is the best season for birding in Lava
November to April is best. Winter brings altitudinal migrants and clear weather, and March and April are the start of the breeding season, when birds are vocal and colourful and the rhododendrons are in flower. May is still good but wetter. The monsoon months are poor for birding and the national park is closed.
