Thambi viewpoint sunrise over the zigzag road

Your driver will knock somewhere between 3.30 and 4.30 am depending on the month; sunrise comes before 5 am in May and June and after 6 am in December. Dress in everything you brought, because the car heater only goes so far. The drive up from Zuluk takes 30–45 minutes on the zigzag road, often counted as 32 hairpins over about 14 km. In the dark you see little but headlights swinging on the bends, which is half the fun.
At Thambi there is a small flat spot by the road with room for a few vehicles. Face west and wait. On a clear morning the Kangchenjunga massif goes from grey to pink to white in about 20 minutes, with the lower ranges in layers below it. Then turn round: as the light comes up, the whole loop system of the road shows on the slope beneath you, and you can count the bends you drove the day before.
Clouds are the risk. October, November and the drier weeks of spring give the best odds; from June to September you will mostly see mist. If Thambi is clouded in, many drivers carry on to Lungthung, a little higher, where the sky sometimes clears above the cloud. Bring a flask of tea from the homestay, a torch and a pair of gloves you can work a phone in. Most trips return to Zuluk for breakfast by 7.30 or 8 am.

Good to know
What time should we leave Zuluk for the Thambi sunrise
Leave about an hour before sunrise. In May and June that means roughly 3.30–4 am, because the sun is up before 5 am; in December and January you can leave at 4.30–5 am. The climb on the hairpin road takes 30–45 minutes, and you want 15 minutes at the top before the first light hits Kangchenjunga. Your homestay or driver will know the exact time for the week you are there.
Can you see Kangchenjunga from Thambi viewpoint
Yes, on a clear day. Kangchenjunga and its neighbouring peaks are visible far to the west from Thambi, and at sunrise they turn pink, then gold, then white. Clear mornings are most likely in October, November, December and the dry spells of March to May. From June to September cloud usually hides the range. No trip can promise the view, so plan two mornings at Zuluk if it matters to you.
Is the Thambi sunrise trip included in Silk Route packages
Usually yes. Most 2–3 day Silk Route vehicle hires and Zuluk homestay packages include the Thambi sunrise run on the morning after your first night, often combined with Lungthung and Nathang. If you hired a car only to Zuluk, expect to pay roughly ₹1,000–2,000 extra for the early drive, indicative 2026. Confirm it in writing when you book, along with the start time.
