The Tsomgo, Nathu La and Baba Mandir day

Leave Gangtok at 7 am. The road climbs past the permit check post to Tsomgo Lake in about 2 hours. Many drivers continue straight to Nathu La first, about 18 km on, because the pass is the stop most likely to cloud over. Arrive by 10 or 11 am, climb the steps slowly and spend 30 to 40 minutes at the top. Sherathang and its war memorial are just below.
On the way down, the road drops to Baba Harbhajan Singh Mandir, the Army shrine to a soldier who died in 1968, where you can take tea and see his room and belongings. Then you return to Tsomgo for a short walk or yak ride on the shore. This order puts the highest stop in the morning and the lowest last, which is easier on the body as the day goes on.
Expect to be back in Gangtok by 4 or 5 pm. A reserved car costs ₹6,500–9,000 for up to five people, indicative 2026, and shared seats run ₹1,000–1,800 a head. Pack water, dry snacks, sunscreen, a cap and gloves. If the agent says Nathu La is shut that day, the car usually does Tsomgo and Baba Mandir at a lower rate, and the difference should come back to you. Check current status before you travel.

Questions people ask
Good to know
Can we do Tsomgo, Nathu La and Baba Mandir in one day
Yes, that is the usual plan. Leave Gangtok by 7 am, go to Tsomgo and then straight up to Nathu La, visit Baba Mandir on the way down and stop at the lake again on the return. It takes 8 to 9 hours. Nathu La is open to tourists Wednesday to Sunday. Check current status before you travel.
What if Nathu La is closed on our date
It happens, mostly after snowfall or for Army reasons, and on Monday and Tuesday by routine. The agent will usually offer Tsomgo and Baba Mandir instead, at the lower rate of about ₹4,500–6,500 per car, indicative 2026. Keep one spare day in Gangtok so you can try again. Ask the evening before, and check current status before you travel.
Is the Nathu La day trip tiring
Yes, for most people. You climb from 1,650 m to 4,310 m in about three hours, spend the day above 3,700 m and sit in the car for six or seven hours on winding roads. Sleep well the night before, eat a light breakfast, drink water steadily and avoid alcohol. Seniors and children often enjoy it more if you skip Nathu La and keep it to Tsomgo.
