Guided hike towards Tinjure top

Leave Gangtok by 7 am with your permit, packed lunch and plenty of water. The car drops you at the road-head near Pangthang, and a walk of about 20 minutes brings you to the sanctuary gate. From there the trail climbs steadily through mixed forest. Oak, rhododendron and bamboo close in overhead, and the path is often damp and mossy even in the dry season. Walk at a steady pace and take short rests.
The route towards Tinjure gains a lot of height, and the last stretch to the top is steep, with steps cut into the hillside. Allow five to seven hours for the return walk, depending on your fitness and how often you stop for birds. Because the sanctuary closes at 3 pm, turn back at an agreed time even if you have not reached the top. Your guide will know the safe turnaround point.
On a clear morning from October to December, the upper ridge gives views towards the Kangchenjunga range. In spring the reward is rhododendrons and birdsong instead. Bring a warm layer, as the top is several degrees colder than Gangtok. Do not leave the trail, do not smoke and carry out all rubbish. Walking poles help on the descent, which is hard on knees. Check current status before you travel. Expect sore legs the next day.

Questions people ask
Good to know
How hard is the Tinjure hike at Fambong Lho
It is a moderate to hard day hike. The trail climbs steadily through forest, and the last stretch to Tinjure top is steep with steps. Allow five to seven hours for the return trip. Reasonably fit walkers manage it with rests; beginners should plan to turn back partway. Go with a local guide, as trails are not well marked.
Do I need a guide in Fambong Lho
Yes, we strongly suggest one. Trails are not well signed, phone signal is patchy and the forest is home to Himalayan black bears. A local guide, about ₹800–1,500 a day, indicative for 2026, knows safe routes, turnaround times and where birds are. Ask the Forest Department or a registered Gangtok agent to arrange one with your permit.
Can I see Kangchenjunga from Tinjure
On clear mornings, yes, the upper ridge looks towards the Kangchenjunga range. Your best chance is from October to December, when the air is driest. In spring, haze and cloud often build by late morning, and from June to September the peaks are usually hidden. Start early and treat the view as a bonus.
