A night at the Golitar forest log house

The log house at Golitar sits in the buffer zone of the sanctuary, a short walk from the road-head near Pangthang. It is run by the Forest Department, not a private hotel, so think simple: basic rooms, basic bedding and a kitchen you may need to use yourself. Book through the Forest Department in Gangtok along with your permit, and confirm what is provided before you go. Check current status before you travel.
The point of staying is time. Day visitors arrive after 8 am and leave by 3 pm, but from the log house you hear the forest at dusk and dawn. Night sounds take over after dark, and the first bird chorus starts before sunrise. In clear weather the night sky is far darker than in Gangtok. Bring a headtorch, as power can be unreliable, and a warm sleeping layer even in spring.
Carry all food from Gangtok: rice, dal, vegetables, tea, and snacks for the trail. Pack out all waste. Fires and loud music are not acceptable here. A local guide can stay nearby or meet you at dawn for the walk towards Tinjure. Rates are low, roughly ₹500–1,500 per person a night, indicative for 2026, but availability is limited, so request it well ahead. Leave the house as clean as you found it, and thank the caretaker before you go.

Questions people ask
Good to know
How do I book the Golitar log house
Book through the Sikkim Forest Department in Gangtok, ideally when you apply for your sanctuary permit. Ask what is included, such as bedding, cooking gas and utensils, and whether a caretaker will be present. Availability is limited and rules can change, so request it well in advance and check current status before you travel.
Is the Golitar log house safe
It is generally safe for sensible travellers, but it is basic and remote. Do not walk the trails alone after dark, as Himalayan black bears live in the forest. Keep food sealed, carry a torch and stay with your group. Tell your hotel in Gangtok your plans, as phone signal can be patchy.
What should I pack for a night at Golitar
Pack all your food and drinking water, a headtorch, warm layers, a light sleeping bag or liner, rain gear, leech socks in the wet months, toilet paper and rubbish bags. Bring cash for the caretaker and guide, as there are no shops or ATMs nearby. Keep your permit and photo ID with you at all times.
