A day on the boulders at Rocky Island

The road from Samsing drops to the river and ends near a wide bed of boulders, some as big as cars, rounded by centuries of floods. In the dry months the Murti runs between them in fast channels and pools. Climb onto a flat rock, sit, and listen. Forest rises on both banks, and the air is cool even at midday.
Watch for river birds: plumbeous and white-capped redstarts flicking on the stones, forktails along the edges, and wagtails in winter. Small camps near Rocky Island offer tents and meals for those who want to stay the night, and some arrange a fire in the evening where allowed.
Rocks are slippery when wet and the channels are deep in places. Do not swim, do not let children jump between boulders, and stay off the river altogether after rain upstream, when the level can rise quickly. Carry your rubbish back with you; litter is a problem on busy weekends.
