Forest-edge walk towards Neora Valley

Neora Valley National Park covers the high forest north of Samsing and is managed from the Kalimpong side. Its lower slopes, near Samsing, Suntalekhola and Mouchuki, are dense subtropical forest with tall trees, ferns, orchids and many birds. Higher up, beyond day-walk range, it holds red pandas and temperate forest.
Forest walks from this side need permission from the forest department and a local guide, and some trails are closed in certain seasons. Your homestay or the forest camp can tell you which routes are open and arrange both. A typical half-day walk climbs steadily through forest for a couple of hours and returns the same way.
Expect steep, sometimes slippery paths, leeches after rain, and little chance of seeing big mammals; the rewards are birds, plants and the forest itself. Wear proper shoes and long socks, carry water and snacks, and start early. Do not go off-trail. Check current status before you travel.
