Forest drive from the Sukna gate

Sukna sits where the Darjeeling road begins to climb, with the toy train line running alongside. The sanctuary's southern gate here opens into flat and gently rising forest, cut by streams that come down from the hills. Gaur, elephants, barking deer, wild boar and peafowl live here, and leopards, though they are seldom seen.
The forest department has organised forest drives and nature walks from the Sukna side in season, with a guide and entry fees per person and vehicle. Arrangements change from year to year, so ask at the Sukna range office or your hotel in Siliguri. Early morning, before traffic noise builds, is best.
This is not Jaldapara; do not expect rhinos or certain sightings. It is a pleasant, short forest outing for people with a few spare hours in Siliguri, and a good place for birds. Carry water and ID. Check current status before you travel.
