Jeep safari to Jatraprasad and Rhino Point
Safari jeeps are open Gypsies or similar, licensed by the forest department and driven by local drivers, with a forest guide on board. They leave from the Lataguri side at the start of each slot. The route crosses sal forest, where you may see barking deer, wild boar and langurs, before reaching the towers. At Jatraprasad you climb up and wait over a salt lick and open grassland that slopes down towards the Murti.
The best sightings come from patience. Gaur often graze in the open in the afternoon, rhinos come to wallow and feed in the grassland, and elephants cross from the forest edge. Hornbills fly over in pairs. Each slot is about 90 minutes in total, so time on the tower may be 30–45 minutes. Do not ask the driver to speed up or chase animals; it is against the rules and rarely works.
Book online on the forest department's portal or at the Lataguri counter. The price covers the jeep, entry, guide and tower fees in most packages, but check exactly what is included. In winter, morning slots are cold and sometimes foggy; the 3:30 p.m. slot is warmer and often better for gaur. Check current status before you travel.
