Birding from the Chukchuki watchtower

Chukchuki is a watchtower on the edge of Gorumara, close to the forest villages, looking over a marshy stretch and grassland. Birders like it because so many habitats meet: tall trees for hornbills and green pigeons, open ground for lapwings and bee-eaters, water for kingfishers and egrets. Gorumara records about 194 bird species, and many of them pass through this view.
Arrive at the first slot with binoculars and a field guide or app. Expect red-breasted and Alexandrine parakeets, great and oriental pied hornbills if you are lucky, lineated barbets, black-hooded orioles, crested serpent eagles and several kinds of drongo. In winter, look for migrant ducks and waders in the marsh. Mammals visit too: gaur and deer come to the grassland, and elephants sometimes cross.
Tickets are cheaper than Jatraprasad, and the tower is less crowded, which matters for birding. Ask your guide to stay quiet and point rather than shout. Combine a morning here with a visit to the Chandrachur tower in the afternoon for a full birding day. Check current status before you travel.

Questions people ask
Good to know
Which Gorumara watchtower is best for birds
Chukchuki is generally the best for birds because it overlooks wet grassland with tall trees nearby, giving a mix of hornbills, parakeets, barbets, raptors and waterbirds. Medla and Chandrachur are also good. Go at the first morning slot with binoculars, and choose a weekday when towers are quieter.
Can I see hornbills in Gorumara
Yes, with some luck. Great hornbills and oriental pied hornbills live in Gorumara and the surrounding forests, and wreathed hornbills are recorded in the region. They are often seen flying between tall trees in the early morning. Listen for the loud whoosh of their wingbeats and look up.
Do I need a guide for birding in Gorumara
A forest guide comes with every safari and tower slot, but most are not specialist birders. If birds are your main interest, ask your lodge for a local birding guide to join, or bring a good field guide or app. Keep expectations realistic in a 90-minute slot.
