Toy train to Sonada, then up to Chatakpur
Sonada is a small hill town on Hill Cart Road and a station on the Darjeeling Himalayan Railway, the UNESCO-listed line between NJP and Darjeeling. Toy trains that run between Darjeeling and Kurseong or NJP stop here. Riding from Darjeeling or Ghum takes you through forest and past roadside houses at walking pace, with the line crossing the road again and again. From Kurseong the climb is steeper and more scenic.
Timetables change by season and some services run only on certain days, so check the current schedule and book on IRCTC before planning around it. The joyride trains that go only between Darjeeling and Ghum do not reach Sonada. Once you arrive, walk out to the road, have tea in the bazaar and meet your homestay car for the last 7 km, a rough forest track that takes about 30–40 minutes.
If the train timing does not fit, take a shared jeep along Hill Cart Road to Sonada instead, ₹60–120 a seat from Darjeeling, indicative 2026. Either way, you save the cost of a reserved car from Darjeeling. Keep luggage light: carrying big bags on and off the train and into a small jeep is awkward. Leave early so you reach Chatakpur before afternoon mist.

Questions people ask
Good to know
Does the toy train stop at Sonada
Yes. Sonada is a station on the Darjeeling Himalayan Railway between Kurseong and Ghum, and trains running between Darjeeling and Kurseong or NJP stop there. The Darjeeling–Ghum joyrides do not. Timetables change seasonally and in the monsoon, so check current status and book through IRCTC before you travel.
How far is Chatakpur from Sonada
About 7 km by a rough forest road through Senchal Wildlife Sanctuary, roughly 30–40 minutes by car. There is no regular shared jeep on this stretch, so ask your homestay to send a vehicle, usually ₹800–1,500, indicative 2026. Walking up is possible for fit travellers with light bags, but take a guide.
Can I visit Chatakpur as a day trip from Darjeeling
Yes. A reserved car for a day trip costs about ₹2,500–3,500, indicative 2026. Leave early for the views, walk in the forest, eat lunch at a homestay by arrangement and return by afternoon. A night is better, though, because the best light on Kangchenjunga comes at sunrise and the village is quietest in the evening.
