A guided morning walk on the forest road and paths around Chatakpur, through cryptomeria, oak and rhododendron in Senchal Wildlife Sanctuary. Listen for barking deer, watch for langurs and birds, and learn the plants from a villager who has grown up among them.

Senchal Wildlife Sanctuary was declared in 1915 and covers the forested slopes around Tiger Hill, Senchal and Chatakpur. The forest is a mix of native broadleaf trees, such as oak, magnolia and rhododendron, and older plantations of Japanese cedar, or cryptomeria, which grows straight and tall. A walk from the village takes you down the forest road and along paths that villagers use to collect fodder and reach their fields.

Ask your homestay to find a local guide; many young people in the village know the trails well and can point out medicinal plants, fresh animal signs and the calls of barking deer. Himalayan black bear and leopard live in the sanctuary but are rarely seen, and guides know which areas to avoid. Langurs, squirrels and birds are the usual sightings. In spring, rhododendrons flower along the higher paths.

Start after breakfast, wear shoes with grip and carry water. Paths are often damp under the trees and can be steep. Do not leave the trail on your own, light fires or pick plants; rules inside a sanctuary are strict for good reason. In the monsoon, leeches are common and mist closes in quickly, so keep walks short or skip them from June to September.

Questions people ask

Good to know

Is Chatakpur inside Senchal Wildlife Sanctuary

Yes. Chatakpur is a forest village within Senchal Wildlife Sanctuary, one of India's oldest, declared in 1915. That is why the road from Sonada is a forest track and why sanctuary rules apply: no loud music, no fires, no plastic left behind and no wandering off trails alone. Small entry and vehicle fees may be charged at the gate.

What animals live in Senchal Wildlife Sanctuary

The sanctuary shelters barking deer, wild boar, Himalayan black bear, leopard, langurs and many birds, among other species. Most mammals are shy and rarely seen; on a walk you are more likely to hear barking deer or see langurs and birds. Walk with a local guide, keep quiet and stay on paths for the best chance of sightings.

Do I need a guide to walk in Chatakpur

For the forest road near the village, no. For longer forest paths, yes, we strongly suggest a local guide, usually ₹500–1,000 per group, indicative 2026. Guides know which trails are open, where animals have been seen and how to get back before mist settles. Ask your homestay to arrange one the evening before.
