Kharbandi Goenpa and the view over the plains

Kharbandi Goenpa stands on the ridge about 5 km above Phuentsholing, a 15-minute drive up a looping road. It was founded by the Royal Grandmother, Ashi Phuntsho Choden, and is the town's main monastery. The temple has paintings of the Buddha, Guru Rinpoche and the Zhabdrung, the 17th-century unifier of Bhutan, and the garden holds a set of eight chortens representing events in the Buddha's life. Monks live here, so keep voices low and follow the clockwise path.
The reason most visitors come is the view. From the terrace the land drops away to the plains: the grid of Jaigaon, the wide grey bed of the Torsa, and on a clear winter afternoon the tea gardens of the Dooars stretching towards Hasimara. It makes clear how sharply the Himalaya rises here; in 5 km you have climbed from 300 m to roughly 400–500 m, and the next 160 km to Thimphu will take you above 2,300 m.
Go around 4 pm in winter, when the haze thins and the light turns warm. Wear long sleeves and long trousers if you want to enter the shrine room, remove your shoes, and do not photograph inside. There is no entry fee; a small offering at the altar is welcome but not expected. Because the monastery is below the Rinchending checkpoint, Indian visitors on a day visit can usually reach it without crossing into the guided zone; confirm with your hotel.

Good to know
How far is Kharbandi Goenpa from Phuentsholing
About 5 km uphill, a 15-minute drive. A taxi from Zhung Lam with waiting time costs ₹400–600 for the round trip, indicative 2026. Some people walk up in the cool months, which takes about 1.5 hours with a steady climb; bring water. The road is steep and has little shade, so avoid walking between April and September.
Is there an entry fee at Kharbandi Monastery
No. Kharbandi Goenpa is a working monastery with no ticket. You can make a small offering at the altar if you wish. Dress modestly with shoulders and knees covered, remove shoes before the shrine room, and do not take photos inside. Visiting hours follow the monks' routine, so late afternoon before dusk is safest.
What is the best time to visit Kharbandi Goenpa
Late afternoon from October to March. The air is clearer in winter, so the view over Jaigaon and the Dooars is sharper, and the heat is gentle. In the monsoon months, June to September, clouds often sit on the ridge and the road can have small slips, though the monastery stays open.
