The paperwork is part of the trip. We walk you through the gate, the pedestrian terminal and the entry permit process for Indians, what to carry, what it costs, and how to avoid losing half a day in the queue.

Indian nationals need no visa for Bhutan, but every tourist needs an entry permit. You can apply online through the Department of Immigration portal a few days ahead, or on arrival at the Phuentsholing pedestrian terminal next to the gate. Carry an Indian passport valid for at least six months or your original Voter ID, plus passport photos. Children under 18 without a passport need their original birth certificate. Aadhaar, PAN cards and driving licences are not accepted. Check current status before you travel, because the forms and portal change.

The permit is free. What you pay is the Sustainable Development Fee: ₹1,200 per person per night for Indians, half for children aged 6 to 12 and nothing for children under 6. You pay it online with the permit or at the counter. Your hotel bookings and guide details are usually needed, which is why most people let a Bhutanese operator or our team file it. The permit covers Thimphu and Paro; for Punakha, Haa, Phobjikha and beyond, a route permit is issued in Thimphu on working days.

Give yourself time. On a quiet weekday with papers ready the process takes about an hour. On a Saturday in October, with families arriving for the Puja holidays, it can take three. Arrive with printed hotel confirmations, keep copies of your ID, and eat lunch before you join the line. Once stamped, you can walk the town freely; beyond the Rinchending checkpoint, about 5 km up, you must travel with a licensed guide under the April 2026 Department of Tourism notification.

Questions people ask

Good to know

Can I enter Bhutan with an Aadhaar card

No. Bhutan accepts only an Indian passport with at least six months' validity or an original Voter ID card from the Election Commission of India, with passport photos. Aadhaar, PAN and driving licences are refused. Children under 18 without a passport need an original birth certificate. If your Voter ID is damaged or the photo is old, carry your passport instead. Check current status before you travel.

How long does the Bhutan entry permit take at Phuentsholing

On a weekday with all papers ready, about one hour. In peak weeks such as Durga Puja and the Christmas holidays it can stretch to two or three hours, and the office keeps fixed hours. Applying online a few days in advance shortens the wait to a document check. Plan to reach Phuentsholing by early afternoon and keep the evening free.

Do Indians need a guide in Phuentsholing

Not inside the town itself. You can walk Phuentsholing up to the Rinchending checkpoint without a guide. Beyond that, the Department of Tourism notification of 8 April 2026 says all tourists must be accompanied by a licensed guide, including on the road to Thimphu and at monuments. Book your guide before you arrive. Check current status before you travel.
