Hike from Dochula to Lungchutse temple

The trail starts near the Dochula pass and climbs through a forest of rhododendron, hemlock and fir hung with grey-green lichen. The path is clear but steady, gaining roughly 400 m in 1.5–2 hours. Prayer flags mark the higher sections. In spring, from March to May, the rhododendrons flower red, pink and white along the way; in autumn the forest is quiet and the views open up as you climb.
Lungchutse temple sits on the ridge top at about 3,500 m. It is small and simply kept, and on a clear day the view north takes in a broad sweep of the eastern Himalaya, often better than the view from the pass because you are above the trees. Some walkers continue on longer trails along the ridge; your guide will know the options and the state of the path.
Start early to beat the cloud, carry water, snacks and a warm layer, and wear walking shoes with grip, as the path can be muddy or frosty. Allow 3–4 hours round trip. A licensed guide must accompany you. The hike is free. It suits teenagers and fit adults; people coming straight from the plains should acclimatise in Thimphu or Paro for a day or two first, because 3,500 m is high enough to feel.

Questions people ask
Good to know
How hard is the Lungchutse hike from Dochula
Moderate. It is a steady climb of about 400 m from near the pass to the temple at roughly 3,500 m, taking 1.5–2 hours up and about an hour down. The path is clear but can be muddy or icy. Acclimatise in Thimphu or Paro first and go at an easy pace.
Is the view from Lungchutse better than Dochula
Often, yes. The temple stands higher on the ridge and above much of the forest, so the view north to the Himalaya is wider. As at the pass, mornings from October to February give the best chance of a clear sky. Cloud usually builds by midday.
Do I need a guide for the Lungchutse hike
Yes. Under the April 2026 Department of Tourism notification, all tourists travel with a licensed guide beyond the first checkpoint. Your trip guide can walk with you. The trail itself is free. Check current status before you travel.
