One of the larger hotels in Gangtok, in Upper Syari about 10 minutes by car from MG Marg. Around 78 rooms over five floors, a lift, meeting halls and the full kit of a conventional four-star. A sound family choice when you want space, parking and predictability.

The Royal Plaza is in Upper Syari, a residential area above the town centre. Built in 2004 and renovated since, it has around 78 rooms over five floors, lifts, parking and meeting rooms that host weddings and conferences. That size is useful for families and groups: rooms are bigger than in central Gangtok, and the hotel copes well with early departures for Tsomgo or North Sikkim.

The trade-off is distance. MG Marg is a 10-minute drive or a longer walk downhill and back up, so budget for taxis. Reviews are a mix: guests like the rooms and the setting; some mention slow room service and uneven food at busy times. For a quiet base with a lift and dependable hot water, it is a reasonable comfort-tier pick.

Why we like it

  • Large rooms and lifts suit families and older travellers
  • Parking and early-start friendly for Tsomgo and North Sikkim trips
  • Quieter residential area above the town

Watch out for

It is not walkable to MG Marg for most people, so add ₹200–400 a day for local taxis.

Questions people ask

Good to know

How far is The Royal Plaza from MG Marg

The hotel is in Upper Syari, roughly 2–3 km by road from MG Marg, about 10 minutes by car outside rush hour. Walking down is possible, but the return climb is steep. Most guests use local taxis at ₹150–250 a trip, indicative 2026. If you plan to spend every evening on MG Marg, a central hotel may work out cheaper overall.

Is The Royal Plaza good for families

Yes. It is a large hotel with lifts, bigger rooms than most central Gangtok properties, parking for your vehicle and a restaurant on site. Those things matter with children or grandparents. It also handles 6 am departures for Tsomgo Lake and North Sikkim without fuss. The trade-off is that you need a taxi for the MG Marg evening stroll.

Does The Royal Plaza have a lift

Yes, the hotel has five floors served by lifts, which is not a given in Gangtok, where many older buildings rely on stairs down the hillside. This is one reason we suggest it for seniors and families with heavy luggage. Ask for a room facing the valley for views across to the mountains on clear mornings.
