An older, mid-sized hotel on Paljor Stadium Road with about thirty rooms decorated in Tibetan style, a short walk from MG Marg. It sits at the top of the budget band and is a safe pick for travellers who want a proper hotel with a restaurant at a fair price.

Hotel Tibet stands on Paljor Stadium Road, close to the stadium and within walking distance of MG Marg. It has around thirty rooms finished in a traditional Tibetan style, with painted woodwork and thangka-style art, plus a traditional hall used for meetings and dinners. The Sikkim government gave it a Best Hotel recognition in 2008, though that was a while ago and we judge it on what it is today: a dependable, slightly old-fashioned town hotel.

Rooms on the valley side get mountain views in clear weather. The restaurant is useful on cold evenings when you do not want to walk out for dinner. Rates stay moderate for the location, which is why we place it in our budget tier even though it feels more like a mid-range hotel. Book early for October and May, when Bengali and North Indian holiday crowds fill Gangtok.

Why we like it

  • Walkable to MG Marg and Paljor Stadium Road shops
  • Tibetan-style rooms with a real sense of place
  • In-house restaurant for cold or wet evenings

Watch out for

Parts of the building and bathrooms show their age; ask for a renovated, valley-facing room.

Questions people ask

Good to know

How far is Hotel Tibet from MG Marg

It is on Paljor Stadium Road, roughly a 5–10 minute walk from MG Marg depending on which end you head for. The road is busy with traffic, so take the footpath side. Being this close saves you taxi money in the evenings, and you can walk to the main markets, the ropeway and several cafes.

Does Hotel Tibet have a restaurant

Yes, the hotel has an in-house restaurant, and it also has a traditional-style hall used for group dinners and meetings. The restaurant is handy in winter and in the monsoon, when walking out at night is cold or wet. For cheaper local food, MG Marg and Lal Bazaar are a short walk away, where momos cost ₹60–150 a plate, indicative 2026.

Is Hotel Tibet budget or mid-range

It sits at the top of the budget band. Indicative 2026 rates run about ₹3,000–5,500 per room night depending on season and room type. That is more than a basic lodge but less than most hotels with this location and an in-house restaurant. We list it as budget because it gives good value for families who want a proper hotel without paying mid-range prices.
