A family-owned heritage house on Tibet Road, built in the 1950s by a counsellor to the Chogyal on what was then the main road out of Gangtok towards Tibet. Rooms mix traditional and modern styles, and the kitchen cooks Sikkimese dishes with fern shoots and nettle.

Netuk House was built in the 1950s by an executive counsellor to the then Chogyal of Sikkim, on Tibet Road. At the time this road was the start of the trail that traders and travellers took north and east towards the passes into Tibet. The family, the Denzongpas, still own it. The house was built in the traditional way with local materials, and it reads as a home first and a hotel second.

You can choose between traditional and more modern rooms; some have balconies or sit-outs facing the Kangchenjunga range. The restaurant is the reason many guests come back: it serves Sikkimese home food, including dishes made with fiddlehead fern and stinging nettle, which are hard to find on Gangtok menus. There is a small bar and parking, and MG Marg is a short walk away.

Why we like it

  • Real 1950s Sikkimese house with a story tied to the Chogyal's court
  • Sikkimese home cooking with fern and nettle dishes
  • Short walk to MG Marg yet quieter than the main road

Watch out for

Old-house layout means uneven floors, stairs and no lift, and rooms differ a lot, so ask for photos of the exact room.

Questions people ask

Good to know

What is the history of Netuk House in Gangtok

Netuk House was built in the 1950s on Tibet Road by an executive counsellor to the Chogyal, the king of Sikkim. Tibet Road was then the main route for travellers and traders heading north towards Tibet, and the house later served as a stop for traders. It is still owned by the same Sikkimese family and run as a small heritage stay.

Does Netuk House serve local Sikkimese food

Yes, and it is the best reason to stay. The kitchen cooks Sikkimese home-style dishes, including recipes with fiddlehead fern and stinging nettle that most Gangtok restaurants do not serve. Ask about dinner when you book so the kitchen can plan. If you are not staying there, ask whether outside guests can book a meal; policies change, so confirm first.

Is Netuk House suitable for elderly travellers

It works for active older travellers, but not for anyone who struggles with stairs. It is an old house, so there is no lift, floors can be uneven and rooms are spread over levels. Tell the hotel when booking and ask for a room with the fewest steps. Tibet Road itself is a gentle slope to MG Marg.
