A former royal guest house on Paljor Stadium Road, built in 1932 by the Chogyal of Sikkim to host state visitors. Today it is a heritage hotel with old photographs and antiques on the walls, gardens, a spa and a walkable location close to MG Marg.

Nor-Khill was built in 1932 by the ruling Chogyal of Sikkim as the state guest house, where visiting officials and guests of the palace stayed. It sits on Paljor Stadium Road, in walking distance of MG Marg, with lawns in front and the hill rising behind. The Elgin group now runs it, and it keeps the feel of an old official residence: oil paintings, archive photographs of the royal family and antique furniture in the corridors.

Rooms vary by wing and age; the older rooms carry the character, the newer ones more space and modern bathrooms. There is a spa and a restaurant serving Sikkimese and Indian food. We like it for travellers who want history in their stay and want to walk into town, rather than drive down from a resort.

Why we like it

  • 1932 royal guest house with genuine history on the walls
  • Walkable to MG Marg and Paljor Stadium Road
  • Gardens and a spa in the middle of town

Watch out for

Heritage rooms differ in size and light, and the stadium side can be noisy during events, so ask for a garden-facing room.

Questions people ask

Good to know

What is the history of the Elgin Nor-Khill

It was built in 1932 by the Chogyal of Sikkim as the royal state guest house, where official visitors to the kingdom stayed. Sikkim was a separate kingdom until 1975. The building keeps that past on display through old photographs of the royal family, oil paintings and antique furniture. It is now run by the Elgin hotel group as a heritage hotel.

Can you walk from Elgin Nor-Khill to MG Marg

Yes. The hotel is on Paljor Stadium Road and most guests walk to MG Marg in 10–15 minutes. The route has some slope but is manageable for most adults. That walkability saves taxi costs and makes evening strolls easy, which is a real advantage over resorts several kilometres below the town.

Is Elgin Nor-Khill worth the price

It is if you value history and location. You pay a premium for a 1932 royal guest house in the centre of Gangtok, with gardens and a spa. Rooms vary, so ask for photos before you pay. If you mainly want a big modern room and resort facilities, Mayfair or Taj Guras Kutir may suit you better.
