About 52 km, usually around 2 hours by car via Dudhia and the Balason valley, longer in traffic. Shared jeeps take 2–2.5 hours and cost ₹150–250 a seat, indicative 2026. It is the easiest hill drive from the plains, with gentler bends than the Darjeeling roads.
Can I do Mirik as a day trip from Siliguri
Yes. A reserved car for a Mirik day trip from Siliguri costs roughly ₹3,500–4,500, indicative 2026. Leave by 8 am, walk the lake, visit Bokar Monastery and a tea garden, and be back by evening. An overnight stay is calmer, as day trippers leave the lake by 4 pm.
Is the road to Mirik from Siliguri safe
It is a well-used, paved hill road with moderate bends. In monsoon, July to September, slips can block it for hours, and fog is common on winter mornings. Drive in daylight, use a local driver if you are not used to hill roads, and check current status before you travel.
Which is better first, Mirik or Darjeeling
Mirik first works well: it is lower, at about 1,495 m, and closer to the plains, so it is an easy first night. From there Darjeeling is about 49 km via Sukhiapokhri and Ghum. Going the other way, end with Mirik and drop down to Siliguri for an evening train or flight.
