Punakha to Phobjikha and Gangtey

Ways to make the journey
3 h
Most groups leave Punakha after breakfast, stop at Wangdue Phodrang Dzong and have lunch in Bajothang, then drive up through oak and rhododendron forest towards Nobding before turning off over Lawa La and dropping into the valley. You reach Phobjikha by mid-afternoon, in time for the Black-necked Crane Information Centre and a walk before dark.
3.5 h
Minibuses manage the road, though the climb is slow. In winter, ask your operator whether ice on the upper road is expected, as early mornings can be slippery. For groups of 7 or more, this is the cheapest way per head, and one guide covers everyone.

Questions people ask
Good to know
How far is Phobjikha from Punakha
About 78 km, roughly 3 hours by car, via Wangdue Phodrang and Lawa La. With stops at Wangdue Dzong and for lunch in Bajothang, most groups take 4–5 hours and arrive by mid-afternoon. The road climbs from about 1,250 m to about 2,900–3,000 m, so it is much colder at the end.
Do I need a separate permit for Phobjikha
Phobjikha is in Wangdue Phodrang district and is usually covered by the same route permit as Punakha and Wangdue, arranged by your operator in Thimphu on a working day. Make sure it is listed on your permit before you leave Thimphu. A licensed guide is required. Check current status before you travel.
Is the road to Phobjikha open in winter
Yes, normally, and winter is the main season for the black-necked cranes, from about late October to February. Early mornings can be icy on the upper road and over Lawa La, and snow occasionally slows traffic. Drivers usually travel in daylight. Check current status before you travel and allow extra time.
Can I visit Phobjikha as a day trip from Punakha
It is possible but tiring: about 6 hours of driving for a few hours in the valley. We strongly suggest at least one night, ideally two, so you can see the cranes at dawn and dusk, walk the Gangtey Nature Trail and visit Gangtey Goenpa without rushing. Farmhouse stays are good value.
