Phuentsholing to Thimphu
Your options
Ways to make the journey
5–6 h
This is how almost every visitor makes the trip. Your operator sends a Bhutan-registered car with driver and your licensed guide meets you in Phuentsholing after the permit formalities. The car stops at Rinchending, about 5 km up, for permit checks, then climbs through forest to Gedu and Chukha for lunch or tea, and down to Chhuzom before the last hour up the Wang Chhu valley to Thimphu.
5.5–6.5 h
Groups of 7–15 usually travel in a Toyota Coaster or similar minibus, which brings the per-head transport cost well below that of two or three cars. It is a little slower on the bends. Ask for a vehicle with good luggage space, as roof racks are not always used. The same guide rules apply, and one guide can cover the whole group.
Two half-days
If you arrive at Jaigaon after a long journey from Siliguri or NJP, sleep in Phuentsholing, complete permits in the morning without rushing, and drive up the next day. This is not a separate transport option, but it is the most comfortable way to plan the trip and avoids arriving in Thimphu after dark.
Worth a stop

- Kharbandi Goenpa above Phuentsholing
- Gedu town for tea
- Chukha, with the hydropower dam below the road
- Chhuzom, the confluence of the Paro and Thimphu rivers, with three chortens
