Gangtok to Tsomgo Lake

Tsomgo Lake is about 40 km from Gangtok on the Nathu La road, a 1.5–2 hour climb to 3,753 m. You need a Protected Area Permit, so the trip is done in a Gangtok-registered vehicle booked through an agent, either reserved or by the seat.

Your options

Ways to make the journey

Reserved car
1.5–2 h each way

Most people book a Gangtok-registered Bolero, Scorpio or Xylo through their hotel or a travel agent, who also processes the permit with your photos and ID. Up to five people share the cost. Cars leave around 7–8 am and are back by mid-afternoon. The fare usually covers Baba Mandir as well; Nathu La costs extra.

Shared seat
1.5–2 h each way

Agents on and around MG Marg sell individual seats on shared Tsomgo trips, adding solo travellers and couples to fill a vehicle. Book a day ahead with two passport photos and an ID copy for the permit. You go at the group's pace, and the stops are fixed, but it is the cheapest legal way up.

Public transport
Not available

There is no public bus for tourists to Tsomgo, and you cannot go in a vehicle from outside Sikkim or on a bike without the right permits and paperwork. Everyone passes a police checkpost where the Protected Area Permit is checked. Arrange it through an agent; check current status before you travel.

Worth a stop

  1. Checkpost where permits are verified
  2. Kyongnosla Alpine Sanctuary area
  3. Roadside tea and coat-hire stalls before the lake
Leave Gangtok by 7.30 am: clouds often roll over the lake by noon, and early starts mean clearer views and less traffic at the checkpost.
