Why Kalimpong costs less
Kalimpong sits about 70 km from Siliguri, closer than Darjeeling or Gangtok, and it has never been the first name on a Kolkata family's holiday list. That means less pressure on rooms and fewer packaged tours. Comparable hotels usually cost noticeably less than in Darjeeling in the same week, and the villages beyond it, Lava, Lolegaon, Rishyap and Kolakham, are mostly homestays where dinner and breakfast come with the room.
The big costs in these hills are not food or beds. They are vehicles. A reserved car from Bagdogra, a full-day sightseeing car, a car to Lava and a car back down can add ₹10,000–14,000 to a couple's bill. Swap even two of those legs for shared jeeps and the saving pays for most of your rooms.
Here is a frugal day and a comfortable day per person, sharing a room. These are indicative 2026 ranges; prices rise in the Puja, Christmas and May holiday weeks.
| Item | Frugal | Comfortable |
|---|---|---|
| Room (per person, twin sharing) | ₹700–1,500 | ₹2,000–4,000 |
| Village homestay with two meals | ₹1,200–1,600 | ₹1,800–2,300 |
| Meals in town for the day | ₹350–600 | ₹800–1,400 |
| Getting around town | ₹40–150 shared taxi | ₹600–1,000 share of a car |
| Siliguri → Kalimpong, one way | ₹200–300 shared jeep | ₹1,500–2,250 share of a car |
| Kalimpong → Lava, one way | ₹100–150 shared jeep | ₹1,000–1,500 share of a car |
| Neora Valley day | ₹600–1,000 shared jeep | ₹1,500–2,500 own jeep |
Getting up the hill cheaply
Shared jeeps and small cars to Kalimpong leave from the stands near Siliguri's bus terminus and Panitanki More, from early morning to mid-afternoon, and go when every seat is sold. A seat costs ₹200–300, indicative 2026, and the ride takes 2.5 to 3.5 hours on NH10 along the Teesta. NBSTC buses also run from the Siliguri bus terminus for a little less, slower and less frequent. A reserved car from NJP or Bagdogra costs ₹3,000–4,500.
Leave Siliguri before about 1 pm. Later jeeps are fewer, and you can end up paying for a whole car. If you land at Bagdogra, take a shared auto or app cab to Siliguri town first; for a couple it still beats an airport car. Families of four with luggage are often better off with a reserved car, because four seats in a shared jeep cost almost as much and you get a cramped ride.
Since the October 2023 Teesta flood, NH10 has closed many times. When it does, jeeps go round by Gorubathan and Lava or by Darjeeling and Peshok, take longer and cost a little more. Check current status before you travel, and in the monsoon keep a spare day before any train or flight.
Sleeping well for less
Two government properties give the best value in Kalimpong town. The West Bengal Tourism Development Corporation's Deolo Tourist Lodge sits on the town's highest hill with a view over the Teesta valley, at roughly ₹2,500–5,000 a room night, indicative. Morgan House on Durpin, a 1930s stone mansion also run by WBTDC, gives you fireplaces and lawns at a fraction of private heritage-hotel rates. Book both early on the WBTDC website, especially for October and December weekends.
Small guesthouses near the motor stand and the main bazaar cost less still and put you next to the shared jeeps, but rooms vary a lot. Ask about hot water, heaters in winter and stairs before you pay. Holumba Haven, a family-run cottage guesthouse with gardens about 1 km below town, sits in the middle of the price range and includes home-cooked dinners.
In the villages, the cheapest bed is usually the best deal. The forest development corporation's lodges at Lava and Lolegaon cost ₹2,000–3,500 a room night, indicative, and sit on the forest edge. Family homestays in Rishyap, Kolakham, Lolegaon and Sillery Gaon charge about ₹1,200–2,200 per person a night with dinner and breakfast, indicative 2026. Since there are few eateries in the villages, the meal plan saves money as well as effort.
Eating for ₹350–600 a day
Kalimpong eats cheaply. A plate of momos costs ₹60–150, a bowl of thukpa ₹80–180, and a rice-dal-vegetable thali ₹120–250 in the small places near the motor stand and the market, indicative 2026. Breakfast of sel roti, aloo dum and tea at a stall costs under ₹100, against ₹250–400 for a hotel breakfast if it is not included.
Buy food gifts at the Haat Bazaar on Wednesday or Saturday, not in souvenir shops: churpi, local chilli pickle, cardamom and ginger cost less from the farmers who grew them. Kalimpong cheese and the soft milk lollipops are sold in ordinary grocery shops all over town at fixed prices. Carry a refillable bottle; most lodges fill it with filtered water and you save ₹60–100 a day.
In Lava and the villages, there are few places to eat beyond the homestay table and a couple of bazaar eateries. Take dinner and breakfast with the room, and ask for a packed lunch, about ₹150–250, if you will be out all day in Neora Valley or on the trails.
Free and nearly free things to do
Many of Kalimpong's best hours cost nothing or a ₹10–50 note. This is the list we give students and young couples. Entry fees, where they exist, change from time to time, so treat them as indicative.
- Zang Dhok Palri on Durpin, consecrated by the Dalai Lama in 1976, with a terrace over the Teesta and Relli valleys. Free; a small offering is welcome.
- The Haat Bazaar on Wednesday and Saturday mornings, when villages come to town to trade. Free to wander.
- The MacFarlane Memorial Church of 1891 and Thongsa Gompa from the Bhutanese era, a short walk apart. Free.
- Tharpa Choling monastery above the town, founded in 1912, a quiet Gelug house with views. Free.
- Deolo hill at 1,704 m for the widest view of the town; the park charges ₹20–60.
- Cactus and orchid nurseries, many free or ₹50 to walk round, best from March to May.
- In Lava, the walk round Kagyu Thekchen Ling monastery and the pine lanes above the forest lodge. Free.
- Sunrise over Kanchenjunga from Tiffin Dara above Rishyap or Jhandi Dara above Lolegaon. Free if you walk.
What to skip and where to spend
The standard Kalimpong full-day 'points' car costs ₹2,500–3,500 per vehicle, indicative 2026. For a family of four it is fair. For a couple it is poor value, because most points are a short walk or a ₹20–40 shared taxi from the centre. Do the town on foot and spend that money on a car for the village days instead, where there are few or no shared jeeps.
Spend on two things. First, a good local driver for the narrow village roads beyond Lava; a cheaper driver from the plains who does not know them is a false saving. Second, a forest guide in Neora Valley, ₹300–600 per group, indicative 2026, who turns a jeep ride into a walk with birds and stories. Paragliding at Deolo, ₹2,500–4,000, is fun but optional.
When to go for the lowest prices
Rates follow school and festival holidays across eastern India. The Durga Puja to Diwali weeks in October and November, Christmas to New Year, and late May are the dearest, and village homestays fill up then too. Weekends are dearer than weekdays in Lava and Lolegaon, when Siliguri families drive up.
The cheapest good-weather windows are late February to early April and the second half of November, on weekdays. Mid-June to mid-September is cheapest of all, but heavy rain causes landslides, views are rare and Neora Valley is closed. January is cheap and clear, though Lava drops near freezing at night. Check current status before you travel, whatever the month.
Questions people ask
Good to know
How much does a 3-day Kalimpong trip cost on a budget
About ₹6,000–9,000 per person for three nights, twin sharing, indicative 2026, if you take shared jeeps from Siliguri, stay at a government lodge or homestay, eat local and see the town on foot. Add ₹1,500–3,000 for a Lava and Neora day by shared jeep. Our Kalimpong and Lava budget package starts around ₹8,500 per person.
What is the cheapest way from Siliguri to Kalimpong
A shared jeep or small car at ₹200–300 a seat, or an NBSTC bus for a little less, indicative 2026. Jeeps leave from the stands near the Siliguri bus terminus and Panitanki More until mid-afternoon. The trip takes 2.5 to 3.5 hours. Fares and routes change when NH10 closes, so check current status before you travel.
Is Kalimpong cheaper than Darjeeling
Generally yes. Comparable hotels in Kalimpong usually cost less than in Darjeeling in peak season, and shared jeeps from Siliguri cost a little less too. Food and transport inside the town are similar. The savings are biggest in October, December and May, when Darjeeling fills up and its rates rise most.
Can I see Kalimpong without hiring a car
Yes, mostly. The Haat Bazaar, the churches, Thongsa Gompa and the nurseries are walkable from the centre. Durpin and Deolo are uphill walks or a short shared-taxi ride. Lava and Pedong have shared jeeps from the motor stand. You need a car only for Rishyap, Kolakham, Changey Falls and village-to-village legs.
Are homestays near Kalimpong cheaper than hotels
Usually, once meals are counted. Village homestays around Lava, Lolegaon and Rishyap charge about ₹1,200–2,200 per person a night with dinner and breakfast, indicative 2026. A budget hotel in town may cost less for the room but meals add ₹400–600 a day. Homestays also save on cars, since you walk to the views.
Which month is cheapest for Kalimpong
July and August are cheapest, but rain, landslides and the Neora Valley closure make them hard to enjoy. For low prices with fair weather, go in late February, March or the second half of November, on weekdays. January is also cheap and clear, though cold at Lava. Check current status before you travel.
How much is the Kalimpong sightseeing car
A full-day 'points' car costs about ₹2,500–3,500 per vehicle and a half-day about ₹1,500–2,200, indicative 2026, booked at the motor stand or through your hotel. Agree the list of stops and the hours before you leave. For couples, walking and shared taxis cover most of the same places for under ₹200.
Is Morgan House good value
Yes, for the setting. Morgan House is a 1930s stone mansion on Durpin run by the state tourism corporation, with lawns, fireplaces and big rooms, at roughly ₹4,000–8,000 a room night, indicative. The trade-offs are cold rooms in winter, slow hot water and a 3 km ride to town. Book early on the WBTDC website.
Can I use UPI and cards in Kalimpong
In Kalimpong town most shops, hotels and many eateries accept UPI, and larger hotels take cards. In Lava, Lolegaon and the villages, mobile data is patchy and many homestays prefer cash. ATMs are scarce beyond Kalimpong. Carry enough cash for the village nights, plus a small reserve for jeeps and park fees.
