Durga Puja in Siliguri and Jalpaiguri
Sep–Oct, five days ending on Dashami (lunar calendar)

Durga Puja celebrates the goddess Durga's victory over the buffalo demon Mahishasura and her yearly return to her parents' home with her children. In Bengal it is as much a social and artistic festival as a religious one. UNESCO inscribed Durga Puja in Kolkata on its list of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity in 2021, and North Bengal's towns celebrate in the same spirit.
In Siliguri, neighbourhood clubs build hundreds of pandals, temporary structures of bamboo and cloth that range from traditional shrines to elaborate themed installations. Crowds go pandal-hopping from evening until the early hours, especially on Saptami, Ashtami and Navami, and food stalls sell everything from rolls and momos to sweets. Jalpaiguri, the old district town on the Teesta, has older family pujas alongside community ones.
On Dashami the images are taken in procession for immersion in the Mahananda and Teesta, and women play sindoor khela, smearing each other with vermilion. The next day, in many Rajbanshi communities of the Dooars, Bhandani Puja begins. For travellers, the key point is planning: trains, flights, hotels and safaris are booked out weeks ahead.
How to do it well
- Book trains, flights, rooms and Dooars safari slots as soon as booking opens if you plan to travel in Puja week.
- Pandal-hop on foot or by toto after dark; roads near major pandals close to cars and traffic crawls.
- If you want the Dooars quiet, travel the week after Puja instead; prices drop and the weather is clearer.
Questions people ask
Good to know
When is Durga Puja in 2026
Durga Puja follows the lunar calendar and falls in September or October each year, over five main days from Shashthi to Dashami. Check the exact dates in a current Bengali calendar or puja listing before you travel, because they shift by a few weeks each year.
Is it a good idea to visit the Dooars during Durga Puja
Only if you book early and enjoy crowds. Puja week is the busiest of the year: rooms cost the most, safari slots sell out, and roads are slow. The upside is the festival atmosphere in Siliguri and Jalpaiguri. For calm wildlife viewing, come a week or two later.
Where are the best Durga Puja pandals in Siliguri
Large community pujas are spread across the city, especially in neighbourhoods off Hill Cart Road, Sevoke Road and around the main markets, and they change their themes every year. Ask locals or check local news for that year's popular pandals, and go late in the evening on Saptami to Navami.
What is sindoor khela
On Dashami, the last day of Durga Puja, married women offer sindoor (vermilion) to the goddess before her immersion and then smear it on each other's faces and hair, wishing for good fortune. It is now often joined by women more widely. Ask before photographing participants.
