Rhododendron photo stops on the Yumthang road

On the drive from Lachung to Yumthang, the road climbs through the sanctuary for much of its 24 km. In bloom season, whole slopes are coloured, and individual trees can be covered in flowers. Most vehicles race up to the meadow. If you ask your driver politely the evening before, they will usually stop for a few minutes at good spots on the way up or back.
Choose stops on straight stretches with room to pull over, not bends. Step to the forest side, away from traffic. Use a mid-range zoom to frame single trees against the fir forest, and look for colour differences: deep red, pink, white, cream and yellow species often grow within a few hundred metres of each other.
Rhododendrons are protected here. Do not pull branches down for close-ups, pick flowers or walk into the undergrowth. Many species are slow-growing, and the sanctuary exists precisely because of past cutting. A long lens or phone zoom gives you the close-up without damage.

Good to know
When is the best time to see rhododendrons in North Sikkim
Usually from about the third week of April to late May in the Shingba sanctuary and around Yumthang, with lower slopes earlier and higher slopes later. Exact timing shifts with each year's weather. The first half of May is the safest bet for a full bloom.
Can I walk inside Shingba Rhododendron Sanctuary
Not freely. Tourists see the sanctuary from the Yumthang road and short roadside stops. Walking into the forest off the road is discouraged and may require forest department permission and a guide. Some treks pass through the area with special permits through registered operators.
How many rhododendron species are in Shingba
Sources differ: some say over 24 species, others around 40. The variation reflects different surveys and what counts as a distinct species. Either way, it is one of the richest rhododendron areas in India, and you will see several different colours and forms in one morning.
