The sanctuary in autumn gold

Most people think of Shingba only in May, but autumn has its own colour. From late October, birch and other deciduous trees among the firs turn yellow and russet, and rhododendron leaves show their deep green against them. The sky is usually at its clearest in November.
Autumn is also quieter. Puja week brings crowds, but in the weeks after Diwali there are far fewer vehicles on the Yumthang road. Mornings are frosty, around or below freezing, and the light low and clear. It is a good time for photography and for anyone who wants the forest to themselves.
Dress for cold: thermals, a down jacket, gloves and a cap. Rhododendron buds for next spring are already set on the branches; leave them alone. If snow comes early, the forest turns white quickly, and the road may be cleared only partway.

Questions people ask
Good to know
Is Shingba worth visiting outside spring
Yes, as part of the Yumthang drive. In autumn the broadleaf trees turn gold among the firs under clear skies; in winter the forest is often snowbound. You will not see rhododendron flowers, but you will see a protected high forest in a different season, often with fewer people.
When does autumn colour peak near Lachung
Usually from the last week of October to mid-November, depending on when the cold sets in. Larches, birches and maples turn first on higher slopes. By late November many trees are bare. November skies are generally the clearest of the year.
Is the Yumthang road open in November
Usually yes, if no early heavy snow falls, and the sanctuary and Yumthang are visited daily. Zero Point may close from mid-December. Landslide damage from the monsoon is often repaired by then, but conditions change. Check current status before you travel.
