Morning walk to Lachung Monastery

The Lachung Monastery stands on the slope across the river from the main bazaar, reached by a footbridge and a steep lane between houses and apple trees. It belongs to the Nyingma school, the oldest of the Tibetan Buddhist traditions and the one most closely tied to Guru Padmasambhava, who is revered across Sikkim. It was established in 1880 and is still the spiritual centre of the village.
Inside the main hall you will see the usual layout of a Sikkimese gompa: images of the Buddha and Guru Rinpoche, wall paintings of protective deities and rows of seats for the monks. Walk clockwise around the building and the prayer wheels, take off your shoes at the door and ask before you photograph anything inside. Mornings are best because prayers are often under way.
The monastery holds an annual masked dance, or chaam, in winter. Dates follow the Tibetan calendar, so ask your hotel when you book. On the way down, look at the older houses with stone ground floors and wooden upper storeys, built that way to keep animals and stores safe from the snow.

Questions people ask
Good to know
How far is Lachung Monastery from the main road
It is about 1–1.5 km from the main bazaar, across the river by footbridge and up a steep lane. Most people walk it in 20–30 minutes each way. Cars can reach close to it by a longer road if anyone in your group cannot climb. Allow 1.5–2 hours with time inside.
Is there an entry fee at Lachung Monastery
No. Entry is free. You may leave a small offering at the altar or buy a butter lamp if you wish, but nobody will ask you to pay. Dress modestly, remove your shoes before the prayer hall and walk around it clockwise. Ask before taking photographs inside.
When is the Lachung Monastery mask dance
The monastery holds an annual chaam, or masked dance, in the winter season. The exact dates follow the Tibetan lunar calendar and change every year. Ask your operator or hotel when you book, and check current status before you travel, since winter snow can also close the road from Gangtok.
