Autumn colour on the Lachung valley road

The Lachung valley has more broadleaf and larch forest than the Lachen side, which is why its autumn colour is famous. From late October the larches turn gold and the maples red, and by mid-November the higher trees have started to drop their leaves. Clear post-monsoon skies make this the best photography window of the year.
You do not need a separate excursion. On the return from Yumthang, ask your driver to stop at two or three lay-bys between the sanctuary gate and Lachung. Get out, walk 300–500 m downhill with the car behind you, and look back up the valley. The low sun after 2 pm lights the slopes well, but remember the Toong checkpost deadline if you are heading south that day.
Bring layers. Even on a sunny November afternoon, the shade in the valley is close to freezing. Stay off the road edge, where gravel is loose after the monsoon repairs, and do not walk on blind bends where trucks come down fast.

Good to know
When is autumn colour best in Lachung
Usually from the last week of October to about mid-November. The exact peak depends on how early the cold sets in. Larches turn gold first, then maples red. After mid-November many trees are bare. The sky is generally clearest in November, so a slightly later visit often gives better light.
Is November too cold for Lachung
It is cold but manageable. Expect about −2 °C at dawn and 10–12 °C in the afternoon sun. Hotels provide heaters or heated mattresses, sometimes at extra cost. Pack thermals, a down or fleece jacket, gloves and a woollen cap. Above Yumthang it is much colder, and snow can fall.
Can we stop for photos on the Yumthang road
Yes. Drivers on packages will usually stop briefly if you ask politely, especially on the way back. Keep stops short, stay off the road edge and avoid stopping on bends. Plan the day so you cross the Toong checkpost before 4 pm if you are driving south to Gangtok.
