Raft the Teesta from Teesta Bazaar with a licensed operator, on a short family stretch of about 3 km or a longer 8–12 km run with more rapids, mostly grade I to III. Trips run in the dry months and depend on water levels and post-2023 safety rules.

Rafting on the Teesta was introduced at Teesta Bazaar in 1991 by the hill council, and a number of operators now work from offices along the highway. Most offer three choices: a gentle stretch of about 3 km suited to families, and longer runs of around 8 km or 12 km for those who want more rapids. The water is mostly grade I to III, which means waves and splashes rather than steep drops, but the current is strong and cold.

A trip begins with a safety talk and kit: life jacket, helmet and paddle. A trained guide steers from the back and calls the strokes. You will get wet, so wear quick-drying clothes and sandals with straps, and leave phones in the van. The ride ends downstream, where a vehicle brings you back to the office. Children usually need to be at least 10–12 years old, depending on the operator and the water level, so ask in advance.

The season usually runs from October to May, with the calmest water in winter and more volume in spring as snow melts. Operations stop in the monsoon. Since the October 2023 flood changed the riverbed, local authorities have tightened rules and some stretches have been closed at times. Ask your operator about current permissions and check current status before you travel. Morning trips are usually calmer and less crowded than afternoon ones.

Questions people ask

Good to know

Is Teesta river rafting safe for beginners

Yes, on the short family stretch with a licensed operator. The rapids there are mostly grade I and II, guides steer the raft, and life jackets and helmets are compulsory. Choose a recognised operator, listen to the safety talk and do not take off your jacket in the water. Non-swimmers can go, but tell the guide.

How much does rafting cost at Teesta Bazaar

Expect about ₹800–1,500 per person for a short family stretch of around 3 km, and ₹1,500–3,000 for a longer run of 8–12 km, indicative for 2026. Prices vary by operator, group size and season. Confirm what is included, such as transport back from the end point and changing rooms, before you pay.

Is rafting open at Teesta Bazaar after the 2023 flood

Rafting has resumed at times since the October 2023 flood, but stretches and operating months have been affected by riverbed changes and safety reviews. The season normally runs October to May and stops entirely in the monsoon. Ask operators or your hotel in Kalimpong a few days ahead, and check current status before you travel.
