Sunrise walk to Tiffin Dara

Tiffin Dara sits above Rishyap on a bare knoll at roughly the village's height or a little higher, and the path from the homestays climbs steadily for 20–40 minutes depending on where you start. At the top there is space to stand and sit, a few prayer flags and an uninterrupted view north and east over layer after layer of ridges to the snows.
Leave about 40 minutes before sunrise with a torch, warm jacket, hat and gloves. Kanchenjunga catches the first light, and the colour spreads east along the Sikkim peaks over the next quarter of an hour. On very clear mornings the view seems to run all the way along the horizon. Clouds often build by 8 am, so dawn is the time.
The path is easy to follow but uneven and can be frosty in winter, so wear shoes with grip. Ask your host to point out the start the evening before, or to send someone with you if you are unsure. Bring a flask; there is nothing to buy at the top. Sunset from the same spot is good too, and warmer.

Good to know
How far is Tiffin Dara from Rishyap
From most Rishyap homestays, Tiffin Dara is a 20–40 minute walk uphill, depending on where you start. The path is short but steep and uneven, so wear shoes with grip and carry a torch for the dawn walk. Some sources describe it from Lava as about 4 km, as a trail from there also reaches it.
Is the Tiffin Dara walk suitable for seniors
Fit seniors who walk regularly can usually manage it slowly, with stops. The path is steep in parts and cold before dawn, which matters for heart or breathing conditions at 2,600 m. If in doubt, enjoy the sunrise from a north-facing homestay terrace instead, which also gives a good view on clear days.
Which month is best for Tiffin Dara sunrise
October to December is the most reliable, with November usually clearest. January and February are clear but bitterly cold at dawn; March and April often bring haze but also rhododendrons. From May to September clouds usually hide the mountains, and the path can be slippery. Check the evening sky the night before.
