Walk the forest paths below Rishyap in spring, when rhododendron and magnolia flower among oak and fir, with a local guide to show the way and point out birds. Gentle, quiet and one of the best ways to spend a Rishyap afternoon.

The slopes around Rishyap carry mixed temperate forest: oak, maple, magnolia, fir and several species of rhododendron, some growing into tall trees. In March and April the rhododendrons flower in reds and pinks, and the forest floor fills with fallen petals. Even outside the flowering season, the forest is cool, mossy and full of birdsong.

A guide from the village knows the paths, which link farms, forest patches and the trail toward Lava. A loop of two to three hours suits most walkers, with gentle ups and downs. Expect laughingthrushes, tits, nuthatches and woodpeckers, and keep an eye out for barking deer on quiet mornings.

Wear layers and shoes with grip; the ground is often damp. In late spring, leeches can appear after rain, so tuck trousers into socks. Do not pick flowers or dig up plants, as the forests here are protected. Combine the walk with lunch at your homestay and a rest on the terrace in the afternoon sun.

Questions people ask

Good to know

When do rhododendrons bloom at Rishyap

Rhododendrons around Rishyap usually flower from March to April, with timing shifting by a few weeks depending on the winter and the altitude. Lower forests bloom first, higher ones later. Magnolias flower around the same time. Ask your homestay in late February how the season looks before booking specifically for flowers.

Are the forest walks around Rishyap safe

Yes, with a local guide and sensible precautions. Paths are not marked and can be slippery, and mist can come in quickly, which makes it easy to lose the way. Walk in daylight, tell your host your route, carry water and a rain layer, and avoid walking alone in the forest.

Can I see wildlife on Rishyap forest walks

Birds are common, especially laughingthrushes, tits, nuthatches and woodpeckers. Barking deer are sometimes seen early in the morning. Larger mammals, such as leopard and black bear, live in the wider Neora forests but are very rarely seen. Walk quietly, keep to paths, and do not walk in the forest after dark.
