Homestay dinner and valley lights at night

As the sun goes down behind the Darjeeling hills, the valley below Ramdhura fills with blue shadow, and then lights begin to appear: Kalimpong to the south-west, small villages on the Darjeeling side and, upstream, settlements in Sikkim. On a clear, cold night the stars are bright, as there is little light pollution up here. Step outside with a cup of tea before dinner; the change from dusk to darkness takes less than half an hour.
Dinner in a homestay is usually served early, around 7.30–8 pm. Expect rice, dal, a seasonal vegetable such as squash or mustard greens, a fresh pickle, perhaps gundruk, the fermented greens of the hills, and chicken or eggs. Food is cooked on gas or wood fire, often with vegetables from the family's own fields. Portions are generous, and hosts will offer second helpings of rice and dal; it is fine to decline politely.
Ask if you can watch the cooking or help with momos; many hosts enjoy it. Tell them in advance if you are vegetarian or need less chilli. There is little to do after dinner but talk, read or look at stars, which is the point. Carry a torch, a warm layer and a book. Power cuts happen in bad weather, so keep your phone and torch charged during the day.

Questions people ask
Good to know
What food is served in Ramdhura homestays
Most homestays serve home-style Nepali food: rice, dal, seasonal vegetables, pickles, often gundruk soup, and chicken or eggs, with tea and simple breakfasts such as puri or bread and eggs. Vegetarian meals are easy to arrange if you say in advance. Meals are usually included in the room rate.
Is there a restaurant in Ramdhura
No, Ramdhura has no restaurants or proper shops, only family homestays that cook for guests. Book a room with meals included, and carry snacks and any special food items from Kalimpong. The nearest tea stalls and small eateries are in Algarah bazaar, a short drive away.
Is Ramdhura cold at night
Yes, from November to February nights can fall to around 3–8 °C, and homestays rarely have heaters. Rooms have thick blankets, but bring thermals, a warm jacket and woolly socks. In spring and autumn evenings are cool, around 10–15 °C, so a fleece is enough.
