Pedong bazaar walk and morning tea

Pedong bazaar walk and morning tea
Walk Pedong's small main street in the morning, past school children, taxi stands, cloth shops and tea stalls, and stop for tea and sel roti. A slow look at an ordinary hill town that once served mule caravans bound for Tibet.

Pedong's bazaar is one street long, but it carries a lot of history. Shops sell cloth, hardware, groceries and school supplies to villages around, as they once supplied muleteers and traders on the road to Tibet. Many families in town descend from people who came for the trade or for the mission schools.

Mornings are the best time: school children in uniform, farmers bringing produce, jeeps loading for Kalimpong and Rhenock, and tea stalls frying sel roti and puri. Sit down with a glass of milk tea and watch the town wake. Ask shopkeepers about the old days; some older residents remember stories of the caravans from their parents.

There are no big sights on the street itself, so keep this to an hour and combine it with the monastery, Cross Hill and Damsang. Pedong has a degree college and several schools, which keep it lively in term time. If you want souvenirs, look for local pickles, churpi and woven bags rather than mass-produced items.

Questions people ask

Good to know

Is Pedong worth a stop on the way to Sikkim

Yes. Even an hour gives you the 1706 monastery, Cross Hill and a tea in the bazaar, and with half a day you can add Damsang Fort and Sillery Gaon. Pedong is on the main road from Kalimpong toward Rhenock and Aritar, so it fits naturally into a Silk Route or Kalimpong–Gangtok trip via East Sikkim.

What should I eat in Pedong

Try sel roti or puri with potato curry and milk tea at a bazaar stall in the morning, and momos or thukpa at lunchtime. Small restaurants serve simple rice and dal meals. Food is basic but fresh and cheap, about ₹50–200 per person, indicative for 2026. For wider choice, eat in Kalimpong.

Is there an ATM in Pedong

Pedong has limited banking facilities, and an ATM may not always work or have cash. Withdraw money in Kalimpong before you come, especially if you are continuing to Sillery Gaon or the Silk Route, where there are no ATMs. UPI is accepted by some shops when the network is working.
