A good-value day from Gangtok covering Rumtek, the Karmapa's seat in exile, and Lingdum at Ranka, a large Zurmang Kagyu monastery completed in 1999. One reserved car covers both, and the drive gives valley views most of the way.

Start from Gangtok at about 8 am. Go to Rumtek first, while the morning prayers are on and before the tour cars arrive. Spend about two hours in the main hall, at the golden stupa and in the courtyard facing the Karma Shri Nalanda Institute. Have tea in the village, then drive on. Your driver will choose the road to Ranka depending on conditions that season, and the drive usually takes under an hour.

Lingdum Monastery, also called Pal Zurmang Kagyud Monastery, was completed in 1999 and follows the Zurmang Kagyu tradition. It has a large open courtyard and a richly painted main hall, and it feels newer and more open than Rumtek. Young monks study here, and if you arrive at prayer time you may hear chanting. Some visitors also stop at Banjhakri Falls and Energy Park on the Ranka road, a small park built around a waterfall.

A reserved car for the loop costs about ₹2,000–3,000, indicative for 2026, which is good value split between three or four people. Pack water and snacks, as food options at Lingdum are limited. Both monasteries ask for modest dress and quiet behaviour. Be back in Gangtok by mid-afternoon. In the monsoon, cloud and rain can hide the views and roads can be slow, so check current status before you travel.

Questions people ask

Good to know

Can I visit Rumtek and Lingdum on the same day

Yes. Both are within an hour or so of Gangtok, and a reserved car can cover them in five to six hours, with time at each. Go to Rumtek first for the morning prayers, then to Lingdum at Ranka. The car costs about ₹2,000–3,000, indicative for 2026, depending on stops and season.

Which is better, Rumtek or Lingdum

They are different. Rumtek is older in its history, bigger and central to the Karma Kagyu lineage, with tighter security. Lingdum is newer, completed in 1999, more open and often quieter, with a wide courtyard that photographs well. If you have time for only one, choose Rumtek for history and Lingdum for a calmer visit. Doing both costs little extra.

Is a shared taxi possible for the Rumtek and Lingdum loop

Partly. Shared taxis run between Gangtok and Rumtek for ₹60–120 a seat, but connections onward to Ranka are less regular. Doing both by shared taxi usually means returning to Gangtok in between, which takes most of the day. A reserved car is simpler, and split between three or four people it costs only a few hundred rupees each.
