Lingtam village stop on the Zuluk road

Leave Rongli on the Zuluk road and you climb quickly out of the valley. Lingtam is the first village of any size, a scatter of houses, fields and a small bazaar on the slope. Permits are often checked and names registered here, so your driver will stop anyway. Instead of waiting in the car, get out and walk a little way along the road and village paths while the papers are seen to.
Lingtam is a working village. You see maize and vegetable plots, cows and goats, children walking to school and women carrying fodder in bamboo baskets. Traditional Sikkimese houses stand alongside newer concrete ones, and there is a monastery nearby. In spring rhododendrons flower on the slopes above. Ask before you photograph people or step into a courtyard, and keep to paths rather than cutting across fields. A small shop will usually sell you tea and biscuits while you wait.
If you want to climb slowly, sleep here. At its lower height Lingtam makes a gentler first night than Zuluk, and a few registered homestays offer simple rooms and home meals for about ₹1,500–2,500 per person, indicative 2026. Book through your driver or agent, as the stop has to fit your permit route. Lingtam is beyond the permit point, so it is open only to Indian nationals with a Protected Area Permit. Check current status before you travel.

Do we need a permit for Lingtam
Yes. Lingtam lies beyond the Rongli permit point, so Indian nationals need the same Protected Area Permit used for Zuluk, Nathang and Kupup. Check current status before you travel.
Is it worth staying a night in Lingtam
It is if you want to climb slowly or travel with seniors or young children. Lingtam is much lower than Zuluk, so the night is warmer and altitude is not a concern, and the next day's drive to Zuluk and Thambi is shorter. Registered homestays charge about ₹1,500–2,500 per person with meals, indicative 2026. It is quiet, simple and rural.
