While your permit is checked, eat a hot breakfast in a Rongli canteen and walk the length of the bazaar. It was one of Sikkim's oldest markets on the Kalimpong–Tibet trade line, and it still supplies the villages of the upper valley.

Rongli's bazaar is a single main street with shops on both sides, a taxi stand and a few lanes running down towards the river. Canteens open early for drivers and office workers. Order puri-sabzi, aloo dum, momos or a plate of chowmein with sweet milk tea; a full breakfast costs ₹80–150 a head, indicative 2026. Ask for a cup of black tea if you prefer it without milk and sugar, which is common in the hills.

Then walk. The shops sell rice, cooking oil, pots, tools, school uniforms, plastic sandals and, in season, mandarins, ginger and vegetables from the villages above. This is a working market, not a souvenir street, so do not expect handicrafts. It is still worth an unhurried look: the same valley floor once filled with mule caravans resting before the climb to Zuluk and Jelep La, and the bazaar grew to serve them.

Use the stop to stock up for the Silk Route. Buy drinking water, biscuits, dry fruit, a few packets of instant noodles and any medicines you might need, including something for headaches and an upset stomach. There is very little to buy between Rongli and Zuluk, and nothing at all at Nathang. Take a photo of your permit papers on your phone as a backup before you set off up the hill.

Questions people ask

Good to know

Where can we eat in Rongli

Rongli bazaar has several small canteens and roadside eateries along the main street, open from early morning for drivers and office workers. They serve puri-sabzi, aloo dum, momos, chowmein, rice meals and tea at about ₹80–150 per person, indicative 2026. Food is simple and fresh. This is the last good place to eat a hot meal before Zuluk, so use it.

Are there ATMs and shops in Rongli

Rongli has a market street with general stores, pharmacies and small eateries, and it is the last proper bazaar before Zuluk. ATMs exist in the wider area but are not always stocked, so draw the cash you need in Gangtok, Rangpo or Siliguri before you arrive. Carry enough for homestays, food and tips for the whole Silk Route stretch.

What should we buy in Rongli before going to Zuluk

Buy drinking water, biscuits, dry fruit, chocolate and instant noodles for the road, and basic medicines for headache, nausea, colds and upset stomachs. Add a woollen cap and gloves if you forgot them. There is very little to buy between Rongli and Zuluk and almost nothing at Nathang or Kupup, so stock up here.
