Sunrise at Ahaldara viewpoint

Ahaldara is a small hilltop above Latpanchar with an open, almost circular view. Below lie the forests of Mahananda Wildlife Sanctuary and the Teesta valley, and on clear mornings the snow peaks of the Kangchenjunga range rise to the north. The climb from the parking spot to the top is short but steep. There may be a few simple stalls or a lodge nearby, but facilities are basic, so bring water and tea.
Leave Sittong about an hour before sunrise. The road is narrow and dark, so go with a local driver who knows it. At the top, the light first reaches the high snow and then the valley floors, where morning mist lies like a lake. October to December gives the best chance of clear skies; in spring, haze often softens the view, and in the monsoon months it is usually hidden.
Afterwards, drive down to Latpanchar for hornbills while the birds are active, then back to Sittong for a late breakfast. A car for the morning costs ₹1,000–2,000 from Sittong, indicative 2026, or more if you add Latpanchar birding and a guide. Carry a warm layer; even at this modest height, winter dawns are chilly. Respect any signs about restricted areas near the sanctuary boundary.

Good to know
What can you see from Ahaldara viewpoint
On clear mornings, Ahaldara shows the Kangchenjunga range to the north, the Teesta valley below and the forested ridges of Mahananda Wildlife Sanctuary around you. Morning mist often fills the valleys. Clear views are most likely from October to December. In spring haze reduces visibility, and in the monsoon cloud usually hides everything.
How do I reach Ahaldara from Sittong
By car, about 30–45 minutes on narrow roads through Latpanchar, then a short, steep walk to the top. Ask your homestay to arrange a local driver, usually ₹1,000–2,000 for the morning, indicative 2026. There is no regular shared transport at sunrise. Leave about an hour before sunrise to be in time.
Is there a place to stay at Ahaldara
There have been a few small lodges and homestays around Latpanchar and Ahaldara, but options are limited and change. Most travellers sleep in Sittong and drive up for sunrise. If you want to stay at Latpanchar itself, ask a known Darjeeling or Siliguri agent which homestays are currently operating and book ahead.
