Walk the long, swaying suspension bridge over the Pho Chhu, then float down the Mo Chhu on an easy raft that ends in sight of the dzong. A light-hearted half day that families and couples enjoy.

The Punakha suspension bridge crosses the Pho Chhu a short drive or 15-minute walk upstream from the dzong. It is one of the longest suspension bridges in Bhutan, a steel deck hung from cables and strung with prayer flags, linking the town side to villages across the river. It sways as you walk and the wind makes the flags crack. Locals use it daily, carrying shopping and schoolbags. Crossing and coming back takes 15–20 minutes, and it costs nothing.

Rafting is the other way to see the valley from the water. Licensed operators run easy trips on the Mo Chhu, mostly grade 2 with a few grade 3 rapids, lasting 1.5–2 hours and ending near Punakha Dzong. It is suitable for beginners and children from about 10, with helmets, life jackets and a trained guide on each raft. The Pho Chhu has stronger water for experienced paddlers in some seasons.

Best months are March to May and October to November, when the water is moderate and the weather warm. In the monsoon the rivers rise and trips may stop. Expect ₹3,000–5,000 per person, indicative 2026, depending on group size; your guide books it. Carry a change of clothes and a dry bag for your phone. Check current status before you travel, as operators change from year to year.
