Each July Haa holds a summer festival that celebrates the valley's farming and herding life, with local dishes, songs, dances and traditional games. It falls in the monsoon, so pack rain gear, but the valley is green and the high slopes are in flower.

Unlike the big tshechus, which are religious festivals of masked dances held in dzong courtyards, the Haa Summer Festival is a celebration of the valley's way of life. It is held every July, with recent editions in mid-July, and runs over a few days. Expect food stalls with Haa dishes such as hoentoe, local cheese and ara, folk songs and dances, traditional sports and games, and displays about the herding families who spend summers with their animals in the high pastures.

July is the monsoon in Bhutan, so the festival is a deliberate choice: the fields are green, flowers are out on the high slopes, and Haa itself records about 880 mm of rain a year, far less than southern Bhutan. Chele La can be in cloud and roads can be slow after heavy rain, so leave Paro early and allow extra time. Landslides occasionally close roads in the monsoon; check current status before you travel.

Dates are announced each year by the organisers and the Department of Tourism, sometimes only a few months ahead, so confirm them before you book flights. Hotels and farmhouses in Haa are few, and festival nights fill first; book early, or stay in Paro and come for the day. Watch from the edges, ask before photographing people, and dress modestly in long sleeves and long trousers or a skirt, as you would anywhere in rural Bhutan.

Questions people ask

Good to know

When is the Haa Summer Festival

It is held every July. Exact dates change each year and are announced by the organisers and Bhutan's Department of Tourism; recent editions have fallen in mid-July. Confirm the dates before booking flights or hotels, and check current status before you travel, as monsoon weather can affect roads and events.

Do I need a ticket for the Haa Summer Festival

We are not aware of a separate ticket for visitors; the festival is generally free to watch. You still pay the Sustainable Development Fee for each night in Bhutan, and you need a route permit for Haa and a licensed guide, which your operator arranges. Stalls charge for food and crafts, so carry small notes.

Is July a good time to visit Haa

It is good for the festival, green fields and flowers, but it is the monsoon, so expect cloud on Chele La and some rain. Haa is drier than southern Bhutan, at about 880 mm of rain a year. For clear mountain views, come in April–May or October–November instead.
