If five days of camping is too much, walk the last section of the Druk Path in reverse: a day hike from the road above Thimphu up to Phajoding at about 3,600 m and back, with a wide view over the capital.

For travellers who want a taste of the Druk Path without the camping, the climb from Thimphu to Phajoding is the best option. The trail starts from the road above the city near Motithang or the Sangaygang area and climbs about 1,000 m through blue pine forest, hung with prayer flags in places, to the temples at about 3,600 m. Allow 3–4 hours up and 2–3 hours down.

At the top you have the same view that trekkers get on their last morning: Thimphu laid out below, with the dzong, the Buddha Dordenma and the valley stretching north and south. With your guide you can visit a temple if it is open, and eat a packed lunch on the slope. On clear days you also see the snow peaks to the north.

This is a full and steep day, and a good acclimatisation hike before the Tiger's Nest or a longer trek. Start early, carry plenty of water, snacks and a rain jacket, and wear proper shoes. Your guide is required, as for all walks in Bhutan beyond town. In wet weather the descent is slippery, so consider a shorter walk instead.

Questions people ask

Good to know

How long is the hike to Phajoding from Thimphu

Plan on 5–7 hours for the round trip: about 3–4 hours up and 2–3 hours down, gaining and losing about 1,000 m. The trail starts from the road above the city near Motithang or Sangaygang. It is steep but well trodden. Start by 8 am, carry water and lunch, and go with your licensed guide.

Is the Phajoding hike harder than Tiger's Nest

A little, for most people. Phajoding climbs about 1,000 m to about 3,600 m, while the Tiger's Nest climbs about 500 m to about 3,120 m. Both are steep, but Phajoding is longer and higher. Many travellers use Phajoding as a test before a trek, or the Tiger's Nest as practice before Phajoding.

Do I need a guide for the Phajoding hike

Yes. Under current rules a licensed guide is required for tourists beyond the first checkpoint, including walks and hikes outside town. Your guide also knows the trail junctions and can arrange a temple visit at the top. The hike costs nothing extra beyond your usual daily guide and vehicle rate. Check current status before you travel.
