A well-known Lepcha family homestay in Passingdang, Dzongu, in a traditional wooden house built by the host's parents. Five rooms, farm food cooked on wood stoves, and guided walks, birding, angling and riverside camping arranged by local youth.

Mayal Lyang, which in Lepcha means 'hidden land', is a family home in Passingdang village in Dzongu, about 70 km from Gangtok. The house was built in traditional style with wooden floors by the host's parents and has five guest rooms. Meals are eaten in the warm family kitchen, cooked on wood stoves with grains and vegetables from Dzongu, much of it from the homestay's own farm.

The hosts arrange hikes through fields and forest to nearby villages, birding, angling and, in season, overnight camping by the river, with young people from the village as guides. Following Lepcha custom, toilets are outside the main house rather than attached to rooms. It has been featured by Outlook Traveller among Sikkim homestays. They can help with your Dzongu permit.

Why we like it

  • A traditional Lepcha home with deep local knowledge
  • Farm food from the homestay's own fields
  • Walks, birding and camping with village guides

Watch out for

Toilets are outside the main house, as is Lepcha custom, and the Dzongu permit must be arranged well before arrival.

Questions people ask

Good to know

Where is Mayal Lyang Homestay

It is in Passingdang village in Dzongu, the Lepcha reserve across the Teesta from Mangan, about 70 km from Gangtok. The hosts can arrange pickup from Mangan. You need a Dzongu entry permit, which the homestay usually helps arrange from your ID copies and photographs.

Does Mayal Lyang have attached bathrooms

No. In keeping with Lepcha tradition, toilets are not part of the main house, so you walk a short distance to them. Rooms are comfortable, with wooden floors. If attached bathrooms are essential for anyone in your group, discuss it with the hosts before booking.

What can I do at Mayal Lyang

Village and forest walks with local guides, birding, angling, visits to nearby villages and, in season, overnight camping by the river. Most of all, time with the family in the kitchen. Two or three nights are ideal. Ask the hosts what is included in the rate.
