Your options

Ways to make the journey

Reserved car
40–50 min

Your homestay in Rishyap or lodge in Lava can arrange a car for the 11 km. The road is narrow and rough in places, and small cars manage in dry weather, but drivers prefer SUVs after rain. Ask for an early pick-up if you want to reach Tiffin Dara for sunrise.

Forest trail on foot
1.5–2.5 h

A forest trail of about 4 km links Lava and Rishyap through oak, rhododendron and fern forest, climbing steadily. It is lovely in spring and autumn, but paths are unmarked and can be muddy, so go with a local guide. Send your luggage up by car. Allow extra time for photographs and birds, and start early to reach Rishyap before afternoon cloud.

Shared jeep via Kalimpong
Varies

There is no regular shared jeep to Rishyap. Travellers on a budget take a shared jeep from Kalimpong to Lava, then a reserved car or the trail for the final stretch. Your homestay can usually send a car down to Lava bazaar to meet the jeep, at the reserved-car rate above. It is the cheapest option for one or two travellers carrying light bags.

Worth a stop

  1. Forest stretches for birds
  2. Rhododendron in spring
  3. Views back toward Lava and the Neora forest
Walk up on the trail with a guide and send your bags by car; it costs little more and is one of the best short forest walks in the region.
